Assist - a player
should be credited with an "assist" if by his/her play, the RESULTING
play DIRECTLY results in a goal. The following will apply to the below gathered
stats for Heritage soccer games:
- corner kick or free kick to a header or one touch goal -
some would say assist, others say no because it was a set play. We will count
it as an assist because the ball had to be played properly for it to happen. But if the ball hit's the ground or rebounds off a defender first - no
assist.
- shot blocked by the keeper or off the crossbar - no
assist - "garbage goal" is being in the right place at
the right time.
- cross to an attacker who has to beat one player before making
the goal - this one's tough. Most would say no because the attacker had to
make significant effort on their own. Others would say yes because the attacker
would not have had the chance if the pass had not been made. We will count
it as an assist.
- cross to an attacker who has to beat more than one player
- no assist.
- long ball over the top to an attacker who dribbles several
yards or more and scores - assist.
